Black Water
Published in Audio Cassette by Sunset Productions (October, 1996)
Authors: Doug Allyn, Douglas Allyn, and Katie Caple
Average review score:

Excellent Northern Michigan Mystery
The second Mitch Mitchell mystery is every bit as good as the first with very atmospheric Northern Michigan settings, a Ross MacDonald-style plot about greed and depravity in a rich family, and a tough, appealing female detective who is free of the Chandleresque pretentions of Sara Paretsky types.

Great stuff, great series.

Blockbuster (Bantam New Fiction)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd Pap) (August, 1988)
Authors: Patricia Marx, Douglas McGrath, and Marx P Marx
Average review score:

Best comic novel since the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!
Written in a crisp pseudo-journalistic style, with the conceit that the two authors are actually researching a book on the production of a major movie blockbuster (based on the "The Pilgrim's Progress"! ), the book is a hilarious takeoff on the insanity of the movie business. In the process, industry icons such as Barbra Streisand, Alfred Hitchcock, and Steven Spielberg receive dead-on-target sendups. If you like the absurdist humor of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Christopher Durang, and MST 3000, you will love this book.

Bloody Border: Riots, Battles, and Adventures Along the Turbulent U.S.-Mexican Borderlands (Great West and Indian Series ; 58)

Wild Times and Wild Men, Border Runners Redux! Turbelent Tee
This is a highly popularized recounting of some episodes which occurred during the turbulent teens of this century along the US Mexican border as a consequence of the spillover of the Mexican Revolution. I have little idea of the sources used by the author but I do know that his tales ring true so far as I, a specialist in the period, am aware of. This book is obviously not intended as final or definitive history. (I had never heard of the publisher until I was told of the book. Nor had I ever seen a review in any publication.) The book's purpose is to entertain. Each story (chapter) stands alone, thus there is a little repetition. The chapters read as stories written for Frontier Times or the True Magazine of the forties and fifties. Taken as it is presented, a remuda of well written, fact-based historical tales intended for the general reader's entertainment (and incidental acquiring of knowledge along with that entertainment) this work succeeds admirably. I enjoyed reading it and I believe you will too. Carter Rila "el cutachero"- the old border runner.

On the way back from Lake Tahoe, my parents and I stopped by Bodie and I am telling you that place is so great to go to. This book is history and I think it would be a great history book to give your kids. That place is from the 1800's. I recammend this book to everyone. It might be small book but it is still great for learning.

Brunschwig & Fils Style
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Murray Douglas, Chippy Irvine, Albert Hadley, and Chippy Arvine
Average review score:

"Good design is Forever"
Murray Douglas is a scholar of historical design. She is keenly aware of the importance of using contempory trends to compliment culturally historic design. The book becomes a resource not only of the history of Brunschwig & Fils and its textiles, trims and wall coverings, but of how well-known designers have integrated the Brunschwig line with their own flair and client's needs. She gives a useful history of the manufacture and use of textiles, trims and wallpapers. Douglas and Irvine tell the story of McLean's photographs as they create a pallette of comfort and style with color and sophistication. I use the book as a text and photo resource for all of my design projects!

Building Large Knowledge-Based Systems: Representation and Inference in the Cyc Project
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (February, 1990)
Authors: Douglas B. Lenat and R. V. Guha
Average review score:

An essential primer in Knowledge Bases and Cyc
This book, (written in 1989) captures the essence of writing a large software system which has a practical bent. The particular system developed here is the Cyc Knowledge Base. It outlines the criteria for inclusion of common sense knowledge in a computer system, with attention to the aspects which are necessary to transform raw facts into organized knowledge suitable for inference.

As it was written in the middle of the ten year Cyc project, it has little information about the eventually produced system, and more emphasis on the system as it was at that time. There is still a great deal of value in the book, however, as someone wanting to understand the current Cyc system can still get a feel for the project and the specialized mindset needed to contribute to it. The philosophical asides are essential for understanding the culture of creation within the Cyc project, with much of the culture continuing to the Cycorp organization.

The two authors are still highly involved in the artificial intelligence field, and highly respected. Dr. Lenat is currently head of Cycorp, and Dr. Guha has gone on to be involved in various companies and with the internet RDF work.

Within an admittedly focused niche, this book is extremely useful with very powerful ideas that are well presented. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in high tech fields with explosive growth potential.

Robert gordons book shows how people in love with the idea of how the bushmen should behave really have no idea of how they actually behave.

Business Statistics
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (October, 2003)
Authors: Ph.D. Douglas Downing and Ph.D. Jeffrey Clark
Average review score:

Great Introduction to Statistics for MBA's
I read this book just before starting an MBA course called "Basic Statistics". I found the book to be clear, intuitive and it certainly covered all topics we discussed in class. In my opinion, this book presents an easy way to understand Statistics by applying them to real business situations. I still use it as reference at work. Highly recommendable for business people interested in Statistics and with no much background in Math (just make sure you know how to add)
